Hall of Fame linebacker Dick Butkus remains one of the most beloved players in Chicago Bears history. Playing nine NFL seasons (1965-73) all in the Windy City Butkus helped coin the nickname "Monsters of the Midway" for Chicago's defense by virtue of his aggressive hard-hitting style of play. Ferocious sometimes dirty but always competitive Butkus defined the Bears' relentless defense during his tenure and contributed 22 interceptions along the way.
Featured in this lot is Butkus's circa 1970 Chicago Bears game-worn home jersey. An incredible specimen the dark navy blue jersey is a medium-weight cotton-knit blend with embedded sleeve stripes long sleeves and reinforced elliptical supports all of which scream gridiron treasure. Its classic two-colored numerals (white tackle twill outlined in orange) date back nearly a half century and the particular placement of the back numerals ("51") connects this fine garment to the 1970 period. His last name "BUTKUS" stretches across the back of the shoulders in similar tackle twill fashion (white outlined in orange). The jersey's lower left front tail sports the proper "Kings O'Shea" 1970's label which is within the correct parameters for a Butkus gamer.
The jersey shows heavy game use as it is littered with numerous team repairs throughout the shoulders upper arms and sleeves. The jersey numerals even display fraying and puckering which also qualifies the garment as being heavily used. Butkus qualified for eight Pro Bowls and was named to the NFL's All-Time 75th Anniversary team. A first-ballot Hall of Famer Butkus remains in the conversation when football fans talk about the greatest defensive players in NFL history. He was that good.
Includes notarized LOA from previous owner a former equipment manager for the Chicago Bulls and Chicago Sting (NASL). Letter from MEARS with perfect A10 grade.
