The late Roger Maris was a quiet man who carried a big stick or in his case a powerful bat. Six seasons after belting a then-MLB record 61 home runs in 1961 for the New York Yankees Maris joined the St. Louis Cardinals in 1967 and helped the team win the World Series by besting the A.L. Champion Boston Red Sox in seven games. This lot features a circa 1967 St. Louis Cardinals game-worn batting helmet attributed to the great Roger Maris. In 1967 Maris batted .261 in 125 games with nine home runs and 55 runs batted in. In the Fall Classic he batted .385 (10-for-26) with seven RBI.
The red American Baseball Cap helmet (size 7 1/8) shows outstanding game use with multiple pine tar remnants caked on throughout the crown of the helmet as well on the bill. Maris’s uniform number “9” appears both on the rear of the helmet as well as on the front of the bill. The Cardinals’ trademark “STL” logo is situated front and center on the helmet in white lettering outlined in blue. Two air holes exist on the top of the helmet and the brown inside padding appears to be mostly intact despite plenty of game use. Maris’s number “9” also appears underlined on the crown’s inside padding in thick red marker. A great piece of baseball memorabilia worn by one of the game’s unsung heroes.
