The late great Roger Maris was a 32-year-old right fielder playing for the St. Louis Cardinals in 1967. Maris who was in the twilight of his career but still possessed a big bat was just one season removed from hanging up his cleats. In 125 games that year for the Redbirds Maris batted .261 with 107 hits including nine home runs 18 doubles seven triples and 55 runs batted in. He wound up helping the team win the '67 World Series in a memorable seven-game Fall Classic showdown with the Boston Red Sox after hitting .385 (10-for-26) with one home run and seven RBI.
This lot features Maris's 1967 St. Louis Cardinals game-worn home jersey from that world championship season. The beautifully preserved white flannel jersey boasts proper "Rawlings" tagging (size 44) on the left front tail positioned just above sewn-on red chain-stitching reading "Maris 67" to reflect player name and season in question. Remnants of a now absent square tag can be seen to the right of the Rawlings tag. A washing instructions tag exists just below the chain-stitching and includes a sewn-on flag tag reading "SET 1 1967." The jersey features "Cardinals" embroidered across the chest in red-on-blue script lettering with the famed birds-on-bat logo highlighting the team name. Maris's trademark number "9" can be found in double felt (red on blue) numbering stretching 4.5" tall on the left breast area. On the jersey's reverse can be found "MARIS" in semi-circular fashion across the shoulders in red-on-blue felt lettering positioned just above his iconic number "9" this time stretching seven inches tall. The jersey shows moderate use with some slight staining on the front and back. The jersey has possible World Series use but that has not been verified.
MEARS graded A9 (303596).
