A stunning close-up photo of Sugar Ray Robinson in his corner mid-fight. The photographer captured the exertion of the champ, with sweat dripping down his chest and a gaze of concentrated determination on his face. The composition is perfect and so atmospheric that one can almost smell the cigar smoke in the air. Sugar Ray is arguably the greatest fighter of all time, holding the world welterweight title from 1946 to 1951 and the world middleweight title in 1951. He retired the following year but came back to reclaim the middleweight title in 1955. His six savage fights with Jake LaMotta were legendary and would later play a prominent part in the movie “Raging Bull.” In fact, with its dramatic lighting and dynamic angles, this 1960s shot of Sugar Ray almost looks like it could be a still from the film. The front of the photo has light surface abrasions and light staining in the bottom border area. The reverse has various date stamps, handwritten notations, and a newspaper clipping affixed. The photograph measures 8” x 10” including borders and has been encapsulated and graded a Type 1 by PSA.
