This Type 1 photograph captures the historic meeting of two men who helped advance the international Civil Rights Movement in the 1950s: baseball pioneer Jackie Robinson and South African author Alan Paton. While Robinson’s integration of major league baseball advanced racial equality in the United States, Alan Paton’s novels Cry, the Beloved Country (1948) and Too Late the Phalarope (1953) exposed the world to South Africa’s apartheid laws. This photo, taken before a home game at Ebbets Field sometime between 1952 and 1956 by Dodgers photographer Barney Stein, depicts Robinson showing off his engraved signature on one of his bats to the South African author. The Type 1 photo has outstanding detail and contrast. The reverse has Barney Stein’s credit stamp and “Jackie Robinson with author Alan Paton.” The photograph has been encapsulated and graded a Type 1 by PSA/DNA.
