A remarkable and historically rich original Type I photograph capturing Satchel Paige during his rookie-era seasons (1948–49) with the Cleveland Indians, pictured alongside future four-time Olympic gold medalist Harrison Dillard. Even more impressive, this example has been neatly signed by Paige, adding immense significance and rarity to an already extraordinary image.
The approx. 8" x 10" photograph offers an exceptional glimpse of two American sports legends — Paige, the Negro Leagues icon and late-blooming MLB rookie whose debut at age 42 broke barriers and defied time, and Dillard, the world-class sprinter and hurdler fresh off his 1948 London Olympic triumphs. Together, they represent two of the most inspiring figures of the era.
Authenticated by PSA/DNA as a Type I, confirming it was developed from the original negative within approximately two years of when it was taken. Paige’s signature displays beautifully across his right arm in blue ink, providing a rare intersection of photographic and autograph authenticity.
Original, signed rookie-era photos of Satchel Paige are exceptionally scarce — most surviving examples are later reprints or unsigned images. This museum-worthy piece stands as both a tribute to athletic greatness and a powerful testament to mid-century American sports history.
A truly elite dual-sport historical artifact uniting two legends at the peak of their fame — a centerpiece-caliber addition to any premier sports memorabilia or photography collection.
