Although Ty Cobb and Babe Ruth were bitter rivals during their playing days, the two men became friends in retirement. One thing the pair bonded over was their mutual love of golf. In 1941, the two Hall of Famers teamed up for a best-of-three golf tournament for charity. Spectators were charged $1 each to witness the historic match-up. Ty Cobb won their first game, with the money raised donated to the Golden Rule Farm for boys at Franklin, N.H. The second round was won by Babe Ruth, with the proceeds donated to the U.S.O. The rubber match went to Cobb, who later said of the tournament, “In all my life I never competed under such pressure. In my 25 years of baseball, I never had to bear down as hard as I did in that match. Well, I beat Ruth and so I have something good to tell my children. I have finally beaten the Babe at something.” Two thousand five hundred paid their dollar to watch the final match, which was again donated to the U.S.O. This wonderful Type 1 photograph captures the Babe on the course during one of the Cobb-Ruth games. There is some edge wear present with a crease in the upper white border and along the lower left white border. The Bambino has signed the image in bold fountain pen, with “Sincerely, Babe Ruth.” The reverse of the photo is free of any markings or notations. The photo has been encapsulated and graded a Type 1 with the signature graded a NM 7 by PSA/DNA.
