This original Type 1 snapshot of Lou Gehrig was taken during the Iron Horse’s final spring training in 1939. Lou poses informally for the camera in his Yankees road uniform with his first baseman’s mitt tucked under his arm. It was during 1939’s Spring Training that Gehrig began showing signs of his undiagnosed ALS. Teammates and sportswriters noted his uncharacteristically slow speed on the basepaths and the drop in the potency from his once mighty swing at the plate. A poignant and intimate image documenting the last stages of Lou Gehrig’s Hall of Fame career. The photo has some creasing to the paper, none of which intrudes into Gehrig’s image. The reverse has “Lou Gehrig N.Y. Yankees Bradenton, FLA 3-39” inscribed in black ink. The photo has been encapsulated by PSA/DNA and graded Type 1.
