Featured here is a circa 1940 Philadelphia Athletics cap worn by outfielder Sam Chapman who enjoyed a solid 11-year career that included five 20-homer seasons and two 100-RBI campaigns. The royal blue cap has an embroidered white "A" on front that is missing some stitching. The internal Spalding tag remains in the rear next to “7 1/4 S.Chapman” chain stitched in green across the back leather lining. The button on top is missing. Chapman has signed the hat underneath the brim in beautiful cursive and the bold blue signature still rates about 7-8/10. The cap exhibits heavy wear inside and out. It has aged significantly and appropriately. What a superb game-worn cap in a vintage and rare style from the Athletics franchise that would move to Kansas City in 1954.
According to a previous auction listing this hat originated from the personal collection of former MLB and A’s player Joe Dugan.
