Five months before Joe Tinker's death when his health was ailing and one of his legs had already been amputated the Chicago Cubs legend wrote this gracious heartfelt letter to Baseball Hall of Fame President Paul Kerr. In the one-page missive Tinker expresses great appreciation for the Hall of Fame's bronze plaque in his honor which had been unveiled for his induction alongside Johnny Evers and Frank Chance in the Hall's Class of '46. Also present in the letter's content is an undercurrent of Tinker's awareness of his own mortality. He speaks of the plaque as a legacy for the next generation of his family and he also describes how despite his infirmities there will always be a deep emotional connection between himself and the hallowed institution. The typewritten message which appears on a Florida real-state broker's stationery and is dated February 2 1948 reads in full "Dear Mr. Kerr: I want to thank the Hall of Fame and yourself for a beautiful plaque as I will always treasure that and it will be a great thing for my children. I'm very sorry that I am unable to get around much on account of my condition but my heart will still be with the Hall of Fame. Best Wishes. Sincerely Joe Tinker." Tinker's black-ink signature is bold and clear while also bearing witness to the onset of an unsteady hand as his health worsened. The 7-1/4" x 10-1/2" page presents in EX condition with standard mailing folds and routine evidence of past filing including a "Received" stamping.  Nicely framed and matted.
