This extremely rare blank barreled Jose Ramos professional model bat dates to the 1927 period and shows evidence of heavy use with a handle crack that has been repaired with nails. The top barrel shows evidence of drying. Many ball marks are visible on the front right and left barrel. Visible on the right barrel in vintage grease pencil is the factory side writing with the player name and date the bat was returned to Hillerich & Bradsby 35oz. Jose Ramos 6-3-27. The appearance of this factory side writing on the right barrel is an outstanding feature of this bat and irrefutably ties it to Ramos. From the teens to the early when players were in need of bats of the samemodel it was commonplace for the player to send his preferred model back to the factory to request models of the same type. Upon receipt an area on the barrel was planed and inscribed by an H&B employee with the length and weight player's name date received and team affiliation. This Cheo Ramos model was also believed to have been used by Manuel Dominquez Onis nicknamed Ralph as a member of the 193 1 Johnstown Johnnys of the Mid Atlantic League. No doubt the bat was used by Onis during winter ball in Cuba then brought to the United States and used with the Johnstown Johnnys. Onis had a brief "cup of coffee" in the Major Leagues when he played only one game for the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1935. Onis had one plate appearance and singled giving him a lifetime Major League Batting Average of 1.000.
