There might not have been a better right-hander than the great Walter Johnson. Since he pitched in the years before radar guns, we do not know exactly how fast he threw, but an awe-struck Ty Cobb swore the ball hissed as it crossed the plate. Using his trademark fluid sidearm motion, “The Big Train” amassed 12 seasons of 20 or more wins for the Senators. This photo depicts Johnson circa 1926-27, when he was putting the finishing touches on his 21-year career. Johnson showcases his effortless sidearm motion in this spring training image. The Type 1 photo displays some wear to its white borders, as well as light staining along the right side. The reverse of the photo features the International Newsreel credit stamp, the original caption slug, and numerous handwritten notations. The photo has been encapsulated by PSA and graded a Type 1 Authentic.
