With a career that straddled both the Deadball and Live Ball eras, there wasn’t another right handed pitcher as feared as Walter Johnson. Playing all his 21 seasons with the Washington Senators, Johnson helped his team win a World Series and two pennants. Along the way he led his league in strikeouts twelve times, won the pitcher’s Triple Crown three times and twice was named the American League’s MVP. The photographer has captured Johnson’s trademark easy sidearm motion as he limbers up for the upcoming baseball season during Spring Training.

According to Marc Okkonen’s uniform database, the image appears to be from the 1926-1927 period during which the “Big Train” won the last 20 of his eventual 417 career victories. This original photo displays some damage on the left and right sides of the image, though none intrude into Johnson’s figure. There is some staining present, most noticeably in the upper left corner and some smudging on the upper right portion. The back of the photo has the International Newsreel stamp along with various handwritten notations. The original caption slug is present along with the remnants of another paper label. The 6x8-inch photo has been encapsulated Type 1 by PSA/DNA.
