Babe Ruth’s trade to the New York Yankees in 1920 ushered in the baseball’s modern era. Ruth had originally rose to prominence as Boston’s ace southpaw, helping the Red Sox win pennants in 1914, 15, 16 and 18. As great as the Babe was on the mound, he simply excelled in hitting home runs, a rarity in the dead ball era. After spending most of 1919 as a regular outfielder with Boston, Ruth was dealt to the New York Yankees, at the time one of the league’s weakest teams. Ruth almost doubled his home run production from the previous season and immediately made the Yanks a pennant contender. This photo was taken on July 10 when the Tigers came to New York’s Polo Grounds to face Ruth and the Yankees. Before the game, the Knights of Columbus presented the young slugger with a diamond studded charm, which he can be seen showing off in this photo. The charm was apparently of the lucky variety as Ruth went on to go 2 for 4 with a double and his 25th home run of the season. He’d eventually hit 54 that first year in New York, setting the new record for single season four baggers. The reverse of the photo has the original photo caption affixed which is dated “7/10/20” and explains the circumstances in which the photo was taken. There is toning and staining from production use present along with several handwritten notations. This wonderful image of the Babe from his first season in the Big Apple has been encapsulated and graded a Type 1 by PSA.
