The finest Type 1 photo of college football’s legendary backfield, better known as “The Four Horsemen of Notre Dame.” The quartet of quarterback Harry Stuhldreher, left halfback Jim Crowley, right halfback Don Miller, and fullback Elmer Layden was brought together by Knute Rockne in 1922, when all four were sophomores. During the next three years, the Four Horsemen dominated college football and put Notre Dame on the map as the football capital of the world. From 1922 to 1924, Notre Dame lost only two games and was undefeated during the 1924 season. This stunning photo captures the Four Horsemen during a break in the action; their battered and mud-splattered bodies give visual proof of the rough, take-no-prisoners style of play that typified Notre Dame football. The paper caption slug on the back notes that Notre Dame Coach Knute Rockne had offered to reunite the Horsemen for a benefit for the unemployed in 1930. This glorious Type 1 photo displays sharp contrast with a warm patina throughout. There is a slight crease in the lower left corner and a larger one on the bottom right. The reverse has the Associated Press Photo credit stamp and the original paper caption slug affixed. The photo has been encapsulated by PSA and graded a Type 1 Authentic.
