The Benevolent & Protective Order of Elks (B.P.O.E.) is a long-lasting brotherhood across the United States that began in New York in 1868 that strives to generate happiness and well-being among their members. In its early days, it was a very prestigious and popular group to be a part of and it still exists today. Lou Gehrig happened to be among many others who were attracted to this group.

This is Lou Gehrig’s personal Membership Coin from the 1920’s that the Hall of Fame first baseman received as an initiation into the brotherhood at the New Rochelle, NY Elks Lodge. The B.P.O.E insignia engraved on the front of the coin features large antlers and “B.P.O.E.” On the reverse, the coin reads “MADE AN ELK”, “B.P.O.E”, “IN LODGE NO. 756” along with “LOU GEHRIG”. Receiving one of these coins was a special accomplishment, even for someone as famous as Lou Gehrig in the 1920s. The coin shows no issues with wear and still appears in excellent condition. Accompanied by a letter of provenance from the previous owner, who acquired the coin from the Gehrig Family.
