In 1929, the Yankees failed to make the World Series for the first time in four seasons, but their biggest star was still in attendance. As a guest of his famous promotional manager Christy Walsh (baseball's first player agent), Babe Ruth was issued this 1929 World Series press pin for the first two games played at Chicago's Wrigley Field between the Cubs and Philadelphia Athletics. Connie Mack's A's defeated Joe McCarthy's Cubbies in five games as the Athletics began an American League dynasty of the own. It wasn't until 1931 that Ruth and the Yankees were able to dethrone the A's for the pennant.
The gold-colored pin with red and white enamel around the perimeter spelling out "World Series" and "Press-1929 Chicago" has the vintage Cubs team logo at center. It retains its original threaded post backing with screw down fastener and remains attached to its original cardboard backing. "1929 World's Series - Wrigley Field - Chicago" are labeled on the 2-3/4 square inch piece of tan cardboard. "Babe Ruth", "Walsh Syndicate" and No. "299" are hand-marked in pen. The cardboard backing has a few tiny creases but remains in great shape and still has its hanging string. The press pin appears EX-MT/NM, with maker “Hipp & Coburn Co., Chicago” hallmarked on the back (not visible when attached to cardboard). There is a classic photo available online of Ruth shaking hands with Hack Wilson at the 1929 World Series wearing an identical looking pin (likely the same one). Includes letter of provenance from the Ruth family.
