For a brilliant but brief period, Smokey Joe Wood was the greatest pitcher in the game. The righthander was called “Smokey” due to his blazing fastball, in evidence when he struck out 23 in an exhibition game. From 1909 to 1915, Wood won 116 games for the Boston Red Sox, including 34 in 1912. His ERA never went above the 2.00 mark and he pitched the Sox to World Championships in 1912 and 1915. After an arm injury robbed him of his fastball, Wood reinvented himself as a hard-hitting outfielder with the Cleveland Indians, with whom he won another championship in 1920. This beautiful portrait, taken by a Paul Thompson Agency photographer, shows Smokey Joe in his Cleveland road jersey at New York’s Polo Ground between 1917 and 1920. The Type 1 photo has been printed with wide white borders. There is some light edge wear and creasing, limited to the white border area. The reverse of the photo has the Paul Thompson credit stamp, handwritten pencil notations, and a Baseball Magazine Collection hologram affixed. The photograph has been encapsulated and graded a Type 1 by PSA/DNA.
