From 1904 to 1941 photographer Charles M. Conlon documented America's Pastime. Present at one of New York’s three big league ballparks almost every game played during the season Conlon’s Graflex camera captured virtually every player to appear in the majors. So prolific and talented was Conlon that his thousands of photographs have become almost intertwined with the way we look at the game’s history. Original Type I photos taken by Conlon are extremely collectible and offered here is a wonderful example featuring Chicago Cub’s pitching ace Mordecai “Three Finger” Brown. During his prime Brown posted six seasons of 20 or more wins and pitched the Cubs to back-to-back World Series titles 1907-08. He would go on to win 239 games and record a stunning 2.06 career ERA. The great Conlon has captured the Cubs ace following through with a warmup pitch before a game at the Polo Grounds circa 1916. The injury which gave Brown his famous moniker can be seen on his outstretched right hand and the photo also beautifully captures the details of the Cub’s road jersey. The reverse has a handwritten notation of “Mordecai Brown” in pencil along with a “CHARLES M. CONLON EVENING TELEGRAM NEW YORK” stamp in blue and an “Original Baseball Magazine” sticker. The photo shows light toning and some edge wear including rounded corners and a small piece missing from the tip of the bottom right edge – none of which affects the content of the photograph. The photo has been encapsulated as an “AUTHENTIC” Type I by PSA/DNA.
