This wonderfully expressive portrait of Ty Cobb has been reprinted in many books and magazines since the day it was snapped in 1915. Featured here is the original Type I photograph of the famous pose complete with the editorial background from which it was used. The slug glued to the back describes a controversial article allegedly penned by Cobb that accuses a certain team – believed to be the White Sox – of stealing signs. AL President Ban Johnson was reported to be so upset by the article’s accusations that he threatened to drive Cobb out of baseball if it was proven that the Georgia Peach wrote its contents. With “the rest of the story” behind this iconic Cobb portrait known it makes one almost see his cap-raising pose as a “goodbye” gesture of sorts had the accusations of the inflammatory article stuck. The 7" by 9" photograph shows light toning and edge wear along with some scratching and creases. The reverse has the content text as well as blue Underwood & Underwood stamping from the renowned stereographic and news bureau photography firm. Encapsulated by PSA/DNA as Type I Authentic.
