At the time this photograph was taken, circa 1912-1914, Walter Johnson was the greatest pitcher in the American League. He won 33 games in 1912, then led the league with 36 in 1913 and 28 in 1914. His ERA during that stretch was a miniscule 1.42 and led the AL in strikeouts all three seasons. This candid portrait of Johnson in his Washington Senators uniform shows the sheer determination that would earn him 373 career wins and a place among the first five players elected to the Hall of Fame. The photo has taken on a warm patina with age. The back has Walter Johnson Wash. Am handwritten in pencil and a Paul Thompson stamp. The 5" by 7" photo has been encapsulated Type 1 by PSA/DNA.
