Pitcher Eddie Cicotte will always be remembered as one of the infamous Black Sox who threw the 1919 World Series. But before he became a part of baseball’s biggest scandal, he was among the American League’s most successful pitchers. This photo depicts Cicotte early in his career when he was with the Red Sox, circa 1911-12. Up to that point, Cicotte’s career had been one of unfulfilled promise, posting a sub-.500 record with the Red Sox. In July of 1912, Boston dealt Cicotte to Chicago where he came into his own, helping the White Sox win two pennants and a World Championship in 1917.

This 5x7-inch original photo of Cicotte swinging a bat (perhaps playing pepper before a game) has a soft sepia tone with great subject clarity. Taken by the great Paul Thompson, the photographer's stamp along with “Cicotte PE Chicago Amer Boston” in pencil appear on the reverse. The photo has an upper right corner crease, but is otherwise in fine overall condition. Encapsulated Type 1 by PSA/DNA.
