Edd Roush began his career in the “outlaw” Federal League before moving on to the National League, where he became one of the best outfielders of the teens and early twenties. Winner of two National League batting titles, Roush led the Cincinnati Reds to the 1919 World Series and remains one of the best hitters in the history of the franchise.
This extraordinary image by famed photographer Charles Conlon dates to the 1916-18 period (based on the specific jersey collar style) and captures the batting stance that earned Roush a place in the Hall of Fame. The full-body image shows excellent detail and wonderful sepia toning from age. There is a crease in the upper right corner and a smaller one in the bottom right edge. While Conlon’s images have almost always been cropped, this outstanding image retains its white border. The reverse has the Charles M. Conlon Evening Telegram New York stamp along with “ROUSH (Cincinnati) Conlon Photo” handwritten in pencil. The 8x10 photograph is encapsulated Type 1 by PSA/DNA.
