An incredible early image of “Old Pete” when he was “Young” Pete. Grover Cleveland Alexander was just embarking on a career that would take him to the Hall of Fame when he was photographed by one of the Paul Thompson Agency’s photographers. Photographs from this early part of Alexander’s career are very rare, with this example of him in action warming up before a game ranking among the finest in existence. During the years this photograph was taken, 1913-1914, Alexander was 49-23 for the Philadelphia Phillies. In 1914, he led the league in wins and complete games. He would pitch the Phillies of the 1915 World Series and lead the National League in wins for four consecutive seasons. The front of the photo shows nice toning from age with outstanding white borders. The reverse has the Paul Thompson stamp and “Alexander P Phila Nat.” handwritten in pencil. The photograph measures 5” x 7” and has been encapsulated and graded a Type 1 by PSA. A very desirable early on-field photo of one of baseball’s greatest pitchers.
