Presented is an original cabinet photograph of Hall of Fame pitcher Joe McGinnity, taken by renowned Boston photographer Carl Horner. Certified by PSA/DNA as a Type I original, this formal studio portrait features McGinnity in his New York Giants uniform, captured during the height of his storied Major League career. The photo mount bears Horner’s distinctive studio credit, reading “Horner-Jordan Co./250 Huntington Ave. Boston/Opp. Symphony Hall” along the base. Although undated, PSA/DNA has attributed the image to the period circa 1902–1904.

This iconic photograph is instantly recognizable to collectors, as it served as the source image for several classic early 20th-century baseball issues, including McGinnity’s 1902–1911 W600 Sporting Life Cabinet card (Type 3), the 1904 Allegheny Card Company card, the 1905 PC782 Rotograph postcard, the 1906 Fan Craze card, and the 1908 PC760 Rose Company postcard. The reverse of the mount features McGinnity’s name along with several editorial notations.

As one of the premier baseball photographers of the era, Carl Horner captured many of the sport’s early legends. His Boston studio’s proximity to both American and National League clubs allowed him to photograph nearly every Major League player of the early 1900s, making his works highly sought after among collectors.

The photograph itself exhibits exceptional clarity and tonal depth, grading Excellent overall, with the mount showing minor tack holes along the right edge and a small spot of soiling near the base.

Original images used in the creation of trading cards—especially those depicting Hall of Famers from early sets—have become increasingly desirable among advanced collectors. This particular example stands out not only for its remarkable preservation and direct connection to multiple vintage card issues but also for featuring Joe “Iron Man” McGinnity, one of the most celebrated pitchers of baseball’s formative years.

Accompanied by a full Letter of Authenticity (LOA) from PSA/DNA.
