Offered here are two antique pieces of football equipment that date to the beginning of the 20th century. First we have an early "dog ear" style helmet with a softer rather malleable leather crown accompanied by more rigid leather "dog ear" flaps. The crown is not adjustable; only the ear flaps are using the original elastic strap that is somewhat intact. The lace that attaches at the bottom has broken apart. Both dog ear flaps have softer padded leather in the interior. The heavy wear and aging on the exterior of the leather crown has obscured any brand or manufacture stamp. It comes in VG condition and largely as-issued.

The quilted football pants from the turn-of-the-century are an extremely rare find in the hobby. The button-up tan-colored relic boasts a quilted design and belt loops indicate a dual system was employed for fastening the garment. Laces are employed for tightening the pants at the ankles/feet. The thick interior knee padding is intact still bears its protective qualities. There is a red-stained (perhaps laundry bled) coloration on each thigh. The manufacturer tagging sewn inside the front waistband has faded from aging and wear. All elements even the three buttons at the crotch remain intact and functionable. Overall the pants come in an amazing NM-MT condition. Both items represent an extraordinary retrospective of gridiron's past and development from its primitive years.

Includes a Letter of Provenance from the Helms Athletic Foundation/LA84 Collection.
