Featured here is an incredibly rare brown leather head harness that dates to 1895. This uniquely-designed headgear features a large round roof (5" in diameter) for extra protection that traditional "four-spoke" head harnesses of the early 1890s did not have. The entire interior is lined with 1/2" of cotton batting. It has two leather straps fully intact one in the front for the chin and another in the back (double-strapped) to go around the neck; both are connected at the ear flaps which have a single hole for air and audio. There appears to be a name "GiP PATRICK" (sic) carved into the very top of the harness which is somewhat flat from storage rather than design. The leather on this ancient piece of early football equipment is very worn and aged with cracking throughout as should be the case for something almost 120 years old. Overall the piece is in surprisingly great shape for its age. It presents in GD/VG condition yet is largely as-issued and problem-free.Includes a Letter of Provenance from the Newport Sports Museum.
