This remarkable grouping unites four separate, handwritten and signed Karl Wingler player-record forms, each individually authenticated by PSA/DNA, that together document the full battery involved in one of the most famous stunts in baseball history: the August 19, 1951 pinch-hitting appearance of 3-foot-7-inch Eddie Gaedel for the St. Louis Browns.
The Gaedel form, dated August 27, 1951 and completed in Gaedel's own hand, lists his exact height and playing weight, notes his position as "pinch-hitter," and even carries Wingler's own emphatic marginal note reminding Gaedel that his "middle name" was "very important" for the record book.
The remaining three forms document pitcher Bob Cain (dated October 28, 1949), whose lobbed pitches to Gaedel resulted in a four-pitch walk; catcher Bob Swift (dated July 13, 1944), who caught the historic at-bat while reportedly kneeling to receive the diminutive Gaedel's target zone; and umpire Ed Hurley (dated January 12, 1951), who worked the game and hand-signed his own record beneath a lighthearted "Baseballically yours" closing from Wingler.
Each document was originally mailed by baseball historian and statistician Karl Wingler as part of his ongoing project to compile American League player records dating back to 1900, and each bears the recipient's genuine period signature. Grouped together, these four forms tell the complete, first-person story of the entire Gaedel battery in one cohesive, fully authenticated offering unlike any other on the market.
