This spectacular composite display features two items with compelling prestige and pedigree. A super condition 1939 Centenary of Baseball First-Day Cover bearing 8/10 to 9/10 blazing signatures from Roger Maris Babe Ruth and Hank Aaron is neatly matted and framed with an unmatched companion piece: original artwork of the three home run stalwarts as depicted by the acclaimed artist Bruce Stark. If that's not enough name dropping for one auction entry try this one on for size. None other than Barry Halper the master of finding coherent logical groupings for everybody from the 500 Home Run Club and beyond pulled off this collecting master stroke by snagging the colorful 14-by-11-inch original artwork from the legendary New York Daily News artist-in-residence Stark and then promptly linking it with the already estimable First-Day Cover. The entire enterprise is matted in red and framed with plexiglass and attractive black frame to 19-by-20-inch dimensions the same size it was when it was first presented to public auction at the historic Sotheby's Auction of the Barry Halper Collection in September of 1999. And just a tad more pedigree: the classic Stark original painting was used as the cover for the Baseball Quiz Book published in 1974 (Ex-Mt softcover copy included with the lot). Not widely known: it was a rule in 1974 that all books published that year were required to have - at a minimum - Ruth and Aaron on the cover.
