Original Type I photograph of Dodger stars Gil Hodges and Carl Erskine taken Aug. 31 1950 in the locker room following a historic performance by Brooklyn's slugging first baseman. Both men were all smiles after a 19-3 drubbing of the Boston Braves at Ebbets Field. Erskine pitched a complete game for his second win of the season. But the night belonged to Hodges who became the first player in National League history to homer four times in a single game doing so off four different Braves pitchers including starter Warren Spahn. Gil finished the evening 5-for-6 including a single with five runs scored and nine driven in.
Captioned on the reverse over the International News stamp the timely image features the two teammates happy as clams each holding up four fingers to commemorate Hodges’ incredible feat. Both expressions are in sharp focus and light surface crinkling does little to detract from the overall high quality. It was recently announced that Hodges will [finally] be elected to the Hall of Fame this summer adding even more value to this classic shot.
