As a testament to her star power, Marilyn Monroe was chosen to appear on the cover of America’s most popular weekly, Life Magazine. Marilyn had been trying hard to shed the “ditzy blonde” roles she had been typecast in and 1952 would prove to be her breakthrough year. She’d appear in no less than five major pictures in that year alone and no doubt this Life Magazine cover helped her rising popularity. The issue hit the shelves the first week of April 1952 and featured a stunning portrait of Marilyn at her sultry best. Life hired famed photographer Philippe Halsman for the shoot, and he certainly delivered. She would appear on five more covers for Life during her lifetime, but this first one is undoubtedly her best. Philippe Halsman’s cover image was specially printed from the original negative in a very limited edition of 250, and this is number 181. The unforgettable image of Marilyn has been professionally framed and is accompanied by a copy of the April 7, 1952, issue of Life Magazine.
