Part of the "Kareem Showtime Photo Collection" (Lot 18), this important shot taken by Lakers team photographer Malek Mansour shows his good friend Kareem shaking hands with Wilt Chamberlain in the post-game ceremony after a new all-time scoring leader was crowned on April 5, 1984. Playing on a neutral court in Las Vegas, the Lakers defeated the Jazz 129-115, but all eyes were on Abdul-Jabbar when his hook shot over Utah’s Mark Eaton moved Wilt to #2 on the NBA’s scoring list. Chamberlain was supportive of Kareem’s monumental achievement, showing gratitude with him on the court afterwards. Kareem has autographed the 8x10 original Type 1 photo in perfect 10/10 black marker. It was gifted to Kareem’s ex-girlfriend Brenda Venus 40 years ago and has never before been offered.
Kareem retired from the NBA following the 1988-89 season as the league’s all-time leading scorer with 38,387 points. The 7’ 2” center led UCLA to three consecutive NCAA titles (1967-69) before winning six NBA championships (five with the Lakers in the 1980s).
