Ann Meyers helped put women's basketball on the map. In 1976 as a high school player from La Habra California the 5' 9" phenom was the first high schooler ever selected to a U.S. national team and promptly helped the U.S. Women's Olympic Basketball team win the silver medal at the Montreal Olympics. She was also the first overall pick in 1979 in the old Women's Professional Basketball League (WPBL) entry draft. Though the league disbanded following the 1980-81 season it served as the precursor to today's Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA). Nowadays Meyers serves as vice president for the Phoenix Mercury and as a color analyst for the Phoenix Suns television broadcasts.
This lot features seven different WNBA-branded game-used basketballs that Meyers picked up along the way. Each one of the white-panel variety includes a team designation from the respective club with which Meyers obtained the basketballs: Los Angeles Sparks (two) Houston Comets Sacramento Monarchs Cleveland Rockets New York Liberty and the Washington Mystics. Each basketball shows considerable game use.
