In September of 1979 Ann Meyers attempted to do something that no other female basketball player player had ever done. She tried out for a roster spot with the NBA's Indiana Pacers basketball team. She received a $50000 contract for her three-day tryout becoming the only woman to receive an official NBA contract as well. Ultimately she did not make the team. As the story goes after graduating from UCLA with a bachelor’s degree in sociology Meyers decided it was time to see just how far her talent and determination could take her. As she stepped onto the court at Indiana’s Hinkle Fieldhouse during the first day of tryouts Sept. 5 1979 she believed she had a real shot at becoming the first woman to make it into the NBA.
“I grew up playing against boys my whole life so this was nothing new for me” she said.
As the three days of tryouts played out five or six guys were cut but Meyers-Drysdale was still in the mix. Then Slick Leonard head coach of the Pacers called her into his office. "I cut her just like any other player" Leonard said at the time. "I felt bad when we started the cut down. I felt bad about it. She really did do a great job. I was proud of her."
This lot features her 1979 Indiana Pacers practice worn shirt jersey and pants from that famous NBA tryout. The "Champion" size medium "Indiana Pacers" white t-shirt has her first name "ANN" heat-pressed on the back in blue letters her number "15" heat-pressed on the left short sleeve and shows plenty of wear including what appears to be either a blood stain or coffee stain on the front. The blue-and-yellow reversible Champion 100% cotton tank top jersey also sports Meyers' heat-pressed uniform number "15" in yellow on blue and blue on yellow (front and back) and shows ample wear during the course of the three-day tryout. Lastly her blue-with-gold-trim Indiana Pacers warmup pants are included size XL. Both pant legs include zippers that stretch about 12 inches from the bottom. Truly a rare collection of basketball attire worn by the only woman ever to be granted a tryout with an actual NBA team!
LOA from Ann Meyers Drysdale.
