During her four-year collegiate basketball career at UCLA Ann Meyers was one of the country's top female guards. Besides being the first woman ever to earn a four-year basketball scholarship to UCLA Meyers was also a four-time All-America selection. The 1977-78 season was an especially memorable campaign for Meyers and the Lady Bruins. Competing in the Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) which was the precursor to the NCAA Women's Division I Basketball Championship UCLA finished first by defeating Maryland 90-74 in the championship game. The team finished the season with a 27-3 overall record under first-year head coach Billie Moore.
For her outstanding and unyielding efforts Meyers - standing just 5' 9" tall - was awarded the 1977-78 Broderick Cup Award as the Outstanding Collegiate Women's Athlete of the Year that is offered here. Now called the Honda-Broderick Cup it is a sports award for college-level female athletes. The award is voted on by a national panel of more than 1000 collegiate athletic directors and one athlete is then chosen as the outstanding Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year and takes home the coveted Honda-Broderick Cup. The prestigious award which measures 12" wide by 12" tall includes a wooden base upon which sits a beautifully engraved pewter bowl which reads: "THE BRODERICK CUP." On the wooden base is a specially engraved silver plaque that reads: ANN MEYERS - Outstanding Woman Collegiate Athlete of the Year - University of California - Los Angeles - 1977-78."
