This amazing action shot shows Jackie Robinson in just his 13th major league game after breaking baseball’s color barrier. The setting is the top of the second inning of the May 6 game against the Cardinals at Ebbets Field in Brooklyn. St. Louis third baseman Whitey Kurowski has grounded to Pee Wee Reese and races to first base as Jackie Robinson stretches to make the out.

This photo is very significant in that Jackie Robinson was particularly vulnerable to malicious injury during two particular moments on the field: standing at the plate and, as this image shows, stretching for a ball while holding his foot on first base. Indeed, later that season, Enos Slaughter of the Cardinals infamously spiked Robinson’s ankle during a play almost exactly as this photo depicts.

Measuring 8” x 10”, this Type 1 has some toning from age along with edge wear to the white border and spider creases in the upper left corner. The back has the original Daily Mirror caption slug affixed with adhesive tape along with several pencil notations. Encapsulated Type 1 by PSA/DNA.
