On September 5 1917 the New York Giants managed by John McGraw took both ends of a doubleheader at the Polo Grounds against the Philadelphia Phillies to clinch the National League pennant. The first game actually iced it for the New York Baseball Giants. Trailing 2-0 entering the bottom of the eighth inning centerfielder Benny Kauff stepped up to the plate with one on and the Giants then down 2-1. He proceeded to smack a two-run homer into the right field grandstand that put the Giants in front by the eventual final score of 3-2. The Giants went to win the second game 5-1 to complete the sweep. They went on to play the American League Champion Chicago White Sox in the World Series and lost four games to two.

This lot features the actual Official National League (Heydler) baseball attributed to Kauff's pennant-clinching home run in the pivotal eighth inning of Game 1 on 9/5/1917. Showing plenty of wear and toning through the years thebaseball is brandishing multiple inscriptions including: “Gaints [sic] Won The Pennant” “This ball was knocked into the right grandstand in 8th inning” “This ball belongs to Andrew H. Kovacs Ansonia Conn” and “Home Run Ball From Kauff N.Y. That won the game for N.Y. N. From Phila. N. September 5 1917.” Lots of history is wrapped up in this historic game-used baseball. The notation/inscription in unknown hand speaks for itself in terms of authenticating the baseball as there was no need or demand for letters of provenance on prized memorabilia items back in the early 1900's.
