Alex Rodriguez hit a total of 696 home runs during the course of his decorated MLB career. He currently ranks fourth on the all-time list behind only Barry Bonds Hank Aaron and Babe Ruth. One of the major milestones he surpassed during his trek toward 700 home runs was passing Hall of Fame slugger Mike Schmidt who finished with 548 big flies. This lot features Rodriguez’s game used signed and inscribed bat that he swung on September 3 2008 to launch home run No. 549.
The game pitted the visiting New York Yankees against the Tampa Bay Rays and A-Rod went 3-for-4 on the night with four batted in. The monumental home run occurred in the ninth inning off Troy Percival with one man on and A-Rod’s Bronx Bombers holding a 6-3 lead. Besides being a milestone dinger for A-Rod it was a milestone home run for Major League Baseball as it marked the first ever homer to be reviewed and confirmed by newly installed instant replay. Rodriguez hit a towering shot down the left-field line that cleared the foul pole and caromed off the wall behind the pole. The umpires went to a review to confirm that it was indeed a fair ball. A-Rod finished off a 3-for-4 day at the plate with 4 RBI. He batted .302 for the season with 35 long balls and 103 RBI.
