This offered helmet was worn by New York Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner during his 2008 rookie season but it represents so much more than that. On September 21 2008 the Yankees played their final home game at Old Yankee Stadium. Leading the visiting Baltimore Orioles 6-3 in the bottom of the 7th inning Gardner entered the game as a pinch-runner for Jason Giambi. He would later score on a sacrifice fly by Robinson Cano to make it 7-3 and that’s how the game ended. Wearing this very helmet Gardner scored what turned out to be the last run ever at “The House that Ruth Built.” New Yankee Stadium would open for the start of the 2009 season.

The Rawlings size 7 1/8 helmet is designed for a left-handed batter as only the right ear has a protective flap. The navy blue shell has the iconic “NY” logo on the front with Gardner’s No. “11” decals on the front brim and again on the rear next to the MLB logo sticker. The helmet is pounded with use. There are Mota Stick marks on the top and brim as well as blue bat rack streaks throughout. A freeze-frame photo of Gardner standing on third base in the 7th inning conclusively matches this very helmet by the second ‘1’ on the front decal and dark Mota Stick marking on the brim. In addition AP image 080921037851 of Gardner crossing home plate shows the similar markings on the brim from a further distance.

After not getting much action as a rookie in 2008 Gardner has become a mainstay in the outfield and a consistent table-setter at the top of the order for the Bronx Bombers. He was an All-Star in 2015 and won his first Gold Glove in left field in 2016. His years of leading the A.L. in stolen bases (like he did in 2011 with 49) may be behind him but Gardner has improved as a hitter and helped the Yankees get off to an incredible start in 2017. Already with 11 home runs through the team's first 45 games he's on pace for well over 30 and has become a serious power threat.

Includes LOA from Steiner (69331). Framed photo provided by the consignor to show the photo-match.
