On September 30 1927 Babe Ruth hit his 60th home run of the 1927 season and with it set a record that would stand for 34 years. Ruths performance more than justified his position as the highest paid player in the game by far. Before the 1927 season began he inked a three-year contract worth $70000 a year. Ed Barrow the team's general manager was being paid $25000. Manager Miller Huggins was earning a little more than half of what Ruth made. No other player earned as much as $20000.

The 1927 season featured a fearsome Yankees lineup of power hitters known as "Murderers Row" that included Ruth Lou Gehrig Tony Lazzeri and Bob Meusel. Ruth led the American League in home runs throughout the year but did not appear to be within reach of his record 59 home runs set in 1921 until he hit 16 in the month of September tying his record on September 29. On September 30 in the last game of the season Ruth came to the plate against lefty Tom Zachary of the Washington Senators in the eighth inning. With the count at 2-1 Ruth launched a Zachary pitch high into the right-field bleachers and then took a slow stroll around the bases amidst a shower of cheers and confetti from the crowd thrilled by Ruths fulfillment of their wish to witness history.

The presented Yankees payroll check was issued to Ruth two weeks prior to his epic milestone. Ruths Geo. H. Ruth endorsement signature on the back rates 8/10 in black ink. Both Yankee owner Jacob Ruppert and secretary Ed Barrow have signed the front in vintage black ink (8/10). An interesting list of $195.23 in deductions from personal expenses incurred on prior road trips in Detroit and Philadelphia appear above Ruths signature. Check itself appears NM but for a vertical fold at center. Encapsulated by PSA/DNA.
