On August 7, 1939, Luz Long competed in an international meet in London organized by the British Amateur Athletics Board (BAAB). The German long jumper finished fourth with a leap of 7.28 meters. Little did Luz or anyone know that this would be one of the last official competitions of Long’s storied athletic career. He went off to serve in World War II soon after and died tragically in 1943 at the age of 30 years old. This rectangular medal awarded to Long is uniquely designed like a picture frame to display standing up. Here are the details.
