Something baseball fans writers and players can all agree on with regards to Torii Hunter: he is a consummate professional who always leaves his best on the field. A 5-time All-Star and winner of 9 straight Gold Gloves (2001-2009) in center field Hunter has put together an outstanding Major League career that began in 1997 with the Minnesota Twins. 2013 was his first in Detroit and he did not skip a beat batting .303 with 17 home runs 84 RBI and 90 runs scored to earn his 2nd Silver Slugger award.
On August 29 2013 the Tigers were in danger of dropping four straight to the visiting Oakland A's. Down 6-4 in the bottom of the 9th facing A's closer Grant Balfour with two on and two out Hunter crushed a 1-1 pitch over the wall in left center for a game-winning walk-off home run helping the Tigers salvage the final game of the series. Just another day at the office for Hunter.
The baseball was retrieved in the A's bullpen by a Comerica Park security guard who then delivered it to an on-site MLB authenticator. It shows heavy game-use its brown dirt streak most likely marking where it landed over the fence. The MLB Authentication cert# EK787330 affixed to the ball reads:"BATTER - TORII HUNTER PITCHER - GRANT BALFOUR BOTTOM OF 9 3 RUN HOMER. WALK OFF. THE BALL LANDED IN THE OAKLAND A'S BULLPEN AND COMERICA SECURITY BROUGHT TO AUTHENTICATOR EARL MONROE."
