1922 was by far the most disappointing year for Babe Ruth. After hitting a record 59 home runs in 1921, Ruth embarked on a barnstorming tour after the World Series. The problem was that new baseball commissioner Kennesaw Mountain Landis had outlawed all barnstorming by any participants in that year’s World Series. Ruth, fueled by his wild popularity and pursuit of the lucrative barnstorming paychecks, defied the commissioner, and proceeded with his tour. Faced with blatant insubordination by the game’s biggest star, Landis needed to show it was he who was in control and that no player, no matter how popular, must follow the rules. Thus, Babe Ruth’s World Series check was taken away and he was suspended until May 20 of the 1922 season. The press turned on Ruth as did many of the fans. When he was finally able to suit up, he was met with jeers from the stands when he went 0 for 4 and in his next game, he was thrown out of the game for throwing dirt in an umpire’s face and going into the stands to confront a heckler. However, his third game back reignited the Babe Ruth magic. In the eighth inning against St. Louis, Ruth hit one of Elam Vangilder’s offerings over the right field wall. The crowd responded wildly, and Babe Ruth had redeemed his reputation. This awesome action shot records the moment Ruth bursts from the batter’s box, watching the ball as it sails into the right field sky. Ruth would hit 35 homers that year and average a disappointing .315. But the Babe learned that even his fame was precarious, and he would carefully temper his dealings with baseball authorities for the rest of his career. This Type 1 photo has been printed to its edges. There is surface scuffs and edge wear present as well as some creasing, most noticeably along the upper edge.
