Coming off a dream season in which he won league MVP honors and led the Golden State Warriors to their first NBA title in 40 years Stephen Curry and the Dubs came out of the gates in 2015-16 firing on all cylinders. The Warriors’ 24 consecutive victories to start the season broke not only an NBA record but a record for all four major sports leagues. Curry led the charge and continued his onslaught of three-pointers delicate floaters and creative finishes as the Warriors compiled a 73-9 record to surpass the 1995-96 Chicago Bulls for the most regular season wins in league history.
And while it was Cleveland not Oakland that would ultimately celebrate a fairytale ending in the NBA Finals it was the “Baby Faced Assassin” who won his second straight Most Valuable Player award for the 2015-16 season becoming the first ever unanimous MVP. Curry led the NBA in scoring at 30.1 points per game led the league with 2.1 steals and added 6.7 assists and a career-high 5.4 rebounds to his final stat line. For the fourth straight season the most famous “Splash Brother” set a new NBA record for 3-pointers made this time shattering his old mark of 286 with an astounding 402. Perhaps most impressive was his efficiency. He shot 50% from the field 45% from three and 91% from the line to join the elite 50-40-90 club.
On the court Steph is known for his unlimited range wizardry handle and that mouthpiece that regularly dangles out the side of his mouth. Some call it disgusting some call it annoying but one thing is for sure. It’s a Steph Curry habit that nobody else in sports is known for. Offered for the first time publicly is one of Steph’s game-used (i.e. game-chewed) mouthguards from his special 2015-16 season. The flexible rubber mouthguard is custom-made to fit Curry’s teeth. It is specially-designed with the Golden State Warriors logo on the left and “#30 CURRY” on both sides built into the molded material. Curry’s bite marks are evident. Thankfully it was presented to us washed and clean from what we can tell. I’m sure there are a couple fans and collectors out there who wouldn’t even mind a little Steph saliva! It comes in a gray mouthguard case with “CURRY” taped on the outside.
The mouthpiece was acquired by the consignor after a December road game. His seats were close to the Warriors bench and apparently it was left behind under one of the team’s courtside chairs after the game. Perhaps it had fallen out of the trainer’s bag. Unlike the infamous mouthguard that Curry threw at a Cavs fan in Game 6 of the NBA Finals this one comes with a lot less baggage.
