The latest Japanese superstar to test his talents in the Majors Masahiro Tanaka joins the New York Yankees starting rotation for the 2014 season with a huge amount of expectations. Not that he can't live up to them. He's coming off perhaps the most dominant season by a starting pitcher ever recorded in professional baseball period. Tanaka went a perfect 24-0 with a 1.27 ERA in 27 starts in 2103 for the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles of the Nippon Professional League. It remains to be seen how these video game numbers will translate to Major League stats in one of the toughest divisions. But the Yankees seem pretty confident that he's the next big thing since Yu Darvish as they shelled out $155 million over 7 years. Tanaka is not a "power pitcher" in the same mold as Darvish as he does not throw as hard and gets fewer strikeouts. But the array of pitches from his mid-90s fastball to his devastating splitter and slider he brings to the table is what separates him from the pack. Needless to say Tanaka will be fun to watch.
