One of the more refined and aesthetically pleasing torches from recent Olympics is certainly from the 2012 London Summer Games. This stunning example is unused and in immaculate condition. It is a true work of art that earned the Design of the Year Award at London’s Design Museum.

Comprised of metal and aluminum it measures 31.5″ (800mm) in length and 4.25″ at its widest point. This offered torch weighs 36.5 ounces. Designed by Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby these torches were manufactured with a joint effort by Tecosim LPG Gas Bullfinch and Premier Sheet Metal. The entire body of the torch has a golden coating over two envelopes of aluminum alloy perforated with 8000 circles—equaling both the number of torchbearers and total miles traveled in the U.K. to carry the Olympic flame. The top features the 2012 London Games emblem. The triangular shape is symbolic of theses multiples of three: the Olympic movement’s values of excellence friendship and respect; the Olympic motto of “Citius Altius Fortius”; and this being the third time London had hosted the Games.

The Olympic flame was lit in Olympia on May 10 2012 and embarked on an 8-day journey across Greece before flying to London. Beginning in Land’s End in Cornwall on May 19 the host country’s leg was carefully planned so that 95% of U.K.’s population would be no more than one hour from the route. After 70 days and 15775 total km (including Greece) the flame arrived in London’s Olympic Stadium on July 27.
