Atlanta Falcons starting quarterback Matt Ryan earned his nickname "Matty Ice" during his collegiate playing days at Boston College. A First Team All-America selection in his senior season of 2007 he guided the Eagles to an 11-3 record and set new school single-season marks in passing yards (4507) and touchdown passes (31). The two seasons prior to his breakout senior campaign were solid efforts as well: 1514 yards passing and eight touchdowns as a sophomore in 2005 and 2942 yards passing and 15 touchdown passes as a junior in 06. This lot features Ryans game-worn maroon-and-gold Riddell helmet that he wore during one or both of those campaigns. As a senior Ryan was named the winner of the 2007 Manning Award given to the nation's top quarterback beating out eventual Heisman winner Tim Tebow and eight other finalists for this year's award. He was then selected in the first round No. 3 overall in the 2008 NFL Draft.
Showing noticeable game use and scrapes on the shell the helmet sports the ACC logo across the front along with applied decals on the back including his uniform number (12) the American Flag the NCAA logo and his team name Eagles across the neck pad. The face mask does not appear to be the original as the cage appears like new and its design is more defense-oriented. This helmet was most likely refurbished for use following Ryan's departure sophomore or junior years but never actually worn by another BC player. It is a known fact that college helmets get recycled in this manner albeit now more carefully with the heightened concerns over concussions. Ryan has signed the left side of the helmet in black marker and added his jersey number "12" in beautiful 9-10/10 black marker.
Includes a Letter of Authenticity from MEARS which dates the helmet to circa 2007. Photos indicate the shell style was used in 2005 and/or 2006. Also comes with an LOA from Tom Coughlin's daughter executive director of the Tom Coughlin Jay Fund Foundation and an accompanying LOA from Gridiron Authentics. Tom Coughlin the current N.Y. Giants head coach was the former head coach at Boston College.
