Among football pundits, Luís Figo is widely considered one of the greatest wingers of all time. His magnificent professional career stretched from 1989 to 2009 with relatively equal stints at Sporting, FC Barcelona, Real Madrid (“Galácticos” era) and Inter Milan. He was the consummate leader of the Portugal National Team for over fifteen years, handing off the baton to a young Cristiano Ronaldo to lead the “Escutcheons” into the present generation. Known for his quick bursts and deft first touch, Figo relished 1-on-1 opportunities on the outside and mastered the art of the cross. While he could finish with the best of them, it was Figo’s incredible vision and timely assists that earned him worldwide respect and made him a cherished teammate for fellow stars like Rivaldo, Ronaldo, Zidane and Beckham.
In his final season with Barca, Figo was named 2000 Ballon d’Or before a record €62 million transfer to Real Madrid where he promptly took home 2001 FIFA World Player of the Year honors. Presented here is Figo’s 1997-98 Barcelona match worn jersey from a memorable season in which he led the prestigious Catalan club to its 15th La Liga title, 2nd European Super Cup and 24th Copa del Rey. Figo tallied seven goals and 15 assists in all competitions that campaign.
The classic red and blue striped, short-sleeved shirt has the iconic F.C.B. crest patch embroidered on the left chest, “Barca” screen-printed at the top, and the logo patch of kit maker Kappa on the right chest. La Liga’s “LFP” logo is screen-printed on the right sleeve. Kappa logos line the blue striped on each sleeve down to a ribbed elastic end. “FIGO” and his famous No. “7” are screen-printed in white on the reverse. The crew neck collar has “FC Barcelona” along the inner and outer rear. Proper Kappa tagging appears within the inner collar indicating size “XL” for the well-built Portuguese legend. Inside the left shirttail is additional Kappa tagging and wash instructions showing heavy usage and multiple laundry cycles. Overall, the shirt exhibits solid evidence of wear. According to included COA, it was sourced from PSV Eindhoven’s Berry van Aerle who likely logged multiple Champions League and/or international matches against Figo for both Dutch club and country.
