After pitching in relief for 19 seasons for the New York Yankees closer extraordinaire Mariano Rivera retired from Major League Baseball in 2013 with an MLB record 652 saves to his credit. His favorite pitch the cutter seemed almost unhittable at times. This lot includes one of Riveras game-worn and autographed New York Yankees home jerseys from the 1996 season his second with the team which also marked the Yankees first World Series-winning campaign since 1978.
On the left front tail of the 100% polyester jersey is the Russell manufacturers tag with washing instructions and size 44. Attached is a flag tag with 100% POLYESTER. Underneath the flag tag is a white tag with RIVERA-96. On the left breast is the team interlocking NY logo done in navy blue tackle twill. On the back is Riveras player number 42 done in the same navy blue tackle twill. In Yankees tradition there is no name on the back. On the left sleeve is a black arm band worn in memory of the late Mel Allen the team's longtime play-by-play man. This was added to Yankees player jerseys on June 18th of the '96 season. On the right sleeve is the 1996 World Series patch. Upon closer examination it appears the patch was added after the 1996 season. Several 1996 and 1997 Rivera baseball cards are included that match this jersey by the pinstripe pattern. What likely occurred is the World Series patch was added after the 1996 regular season and American League playoff rounds in preparation for the Fall Classic.
Rivera has autographed the back of the jersey in blue marker right above his uniform NO. 42 which rates 9/10 in our book. The jersey shows nice game-use with some wear evident on the tackle twill and wash wear to the tagging areas. Several 1996 and 1997 Rivera baseball cards are included that match this jersey by the pinstripe pattern.
Autograph is certified by PSA/DNA (certification #U69199).
