Featured here is an Olympic torch from the 1996 Summer Games in Atlanta. Measuring 32 inches the 1996 torch is the longest ever made for a Summer Olympics. The Centennial torch consists of 22 reeds--one for each of the Olympic Games--with a center handle of Georgia hardwood. The names of each host city are etched in a gold band near the torch base; another band above the wood shows the Atlanta Games logo and Quilt of Leaves. Its diameter varies from 2 1/4 inches at the bottom to 3 1/2 inches at the top. The reeds are aluminum; the hardwood is either pecan or hickory with two gold-plated brass bands. It remains in tremendous shape with light usage from a leg of the torch relay that culminated in Muhammad Ali's magical moment lighting the Olympic flame.
